Apple implements AT&T’s Fake 5G E Network Icon

In the United States, AT&T has been creating a lot of controversy for its 5G Evolution (5G E) naming, which is the company’s consumer-facing name for LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology. 5G E in essence is an extension of existing 4G LTE technology and is not in fact true 5G.

US files fraud charges against Huawei

The US justice department has filed charges against Chinese company Huawei.  A 13-count indictment was unsealed in New York charging Huawei, two of its affiliates and a senior executive at the company. The charges include bank fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

HMD partners with Cricket, Verizon and Rogers to offer latest Nokia phones

HMD Global has announced collaborations with three leading wireless providers in North America – Cricket Wireless and Verizon in the United States and Rogers in Canada. HMD Global is also expanding its selection of Nokia smartphones on Android with the launch of two wireless provider-specific devices coming to the United States this month and another coming to Rogers subsidiary brand, chatr, in Canada very soon.

Samsung Galaxy 2019 Unpacked event taking place on February 20

Samsung has announced that it will be holding its Samsung Galaxy 2019 Unpacked event on February 20. In an invitation sent out to the press, a vertically-oriented "10" is displayed, which leaves no doubt about what will be announced. The 10 also refers to the fact that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Galaxy S family.

Verizon and Samsung plan to release 5G smartphone in U.S. in first half of 2019

Verizon and Samsung plan to bring one of the first commercial 5G smartphones to market in the first half of 2019. The companies will unveil a proof of concept, powered by the upcoming flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem and antenna modules with integrated RF transceiver, RF front-end and antenna elements, at the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui this week.

BlackBerry and Nokia agree to stop patent-infringement suit

BlackBerry and Nokia have agreed to stop a patent-infringement suit over royalties on Nokia's mobile network products. BlackBerry had claimed in February 2017 that Nokia was “willfully blind” to BlackBerry’s patents and egregiously used BlackBerry’s patented technology in Nokia’s wireless computer network Flexi line products and an accompanying software suite.

SiriusXM to acquire Pandora

SiriusXM is to acquire Pandora in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.5 billion, the companies announced Monday. According to the announcement, the deal will create the world’s largest audio-entertainment company, with more than $7 billion in projected revenue in 2018.

Square launches Square Reader SDK for Developers

Square today launched the Square Reader SDK, giving Android and iOS developers the ability to use Square hardware to accept in-person payments directly from within their own application, with no app-switch required. With only a few lines of code, developers can quickly add EMV- and PCI-compliant in-person payments to any Android or iOS app.
